Post subject:  Too much for a complete rebuild?

A local shop quoted about 1800 for a complete rebuild of a stock 1985 /6.
I think that is a little high. I have always wanted to try and do a build myself except for the machining part of the build. Is there any place that anyone knows of around NW Ohio that is 1: cheaper than 1800 and 2: knows what they are doing. If I end up doing most of it myself is there any kind of things that I need to look out for? I dont want anything fancy, just a stock rebuild that wont burn up oil and has decent oil pressure. Thanks for any help, Paul

Does that include in milling? like decking the block or taking any off the head or pocket porting or balancing or 3 angle valve grind?

I paid $2,000 for the work listed above to hit 9.5 compression, plus regrinding the cam, head porting and Teflon coating on the pistons.

I would say that price is about right. If they do ANY machine work at all it will add up to $600 at least plus $300 or so in "cheap" parts. Depending on whats actually done I would say thats fair.
Now if it were me and I was going to spend that I would do some cheap mods to "help" the power from the slant. If it has to go to the machine shop have them up the compression a little. I dont know how much you can mill off of the Hydrolic heads before you have problems. Maybe someone else can chime in about that.
