Hey, all new guy doing a rebuild. In the world of numerous sealants, which sealant compounds are used, in which places? I'm guessing the 1964 shop manual I have is a little outdated. Eg, Permatex black goo No. 2 RTV caulk Teflon Tape Hylomar Hi Temp ANd where do you not use them? Some bolts should not have anything applied, but which ones? THanks, Peace |

I only use RTV on a slant where the cork oil pan gaskets meet the rubber end seals and a tiny bit where the damper meets the timing gear to keep oil from migrating out between the crank and damper. I use Permatex Aviation From a Gasket on flat paper gaskets like the water pump and thermostat housing and also the flat cork oil pan gaskets. Thread lockers are good at keeping manifold studs in the head and at keeping them from leaking. Thread sealants are good for pipe plugs and bolts that enter water jackets, but the Aviation Permatex seems to do well on bolts in water jackets too. Use nothing on a FelPro head gasket. Nothing on a rubber valve cover gasket unless you want to glue it to the valve cover. Nothing on the OD of timing cover seal as it should have a dry sealant coating already. That may look like paint on the seal, but it's not. |

And oil the threads on Head, Rod bolts before you torque them. Really ALL threads should have some lube on them unless you are using never sieze or thread locker. Frank |
