i got a 83 d150 / 225 its got a 904 right now and im sick of it i like to have fun and its just not fun i like shifting and being involved with the truck. i know that it does come with a optional np435 but when i go to buy one every one says that those are all gm and ford tranny, they tell me i need to go with and auto or a 833 but on the web every one is saying 833 are for cars and a 904 adjusted right is best for a truck. well i want to know what experienced tranny guys think lets have a good discussion on this i really need to make my mind up and i need some good solid facts. thanks alot every one.

I would guess you have a 727 trans. My 82 and 87 slant 6 trucks are 727's.
You can always put a manual valve body in it and $#!+ away. Or turn up the pressure for those snappy shifts.

My first pick would be a manual. An 833 O/D, it would be nice if there was a heavy 5 speed out there.
That being said. If I was using the truck mostly to get to work, or down to the 7/11, and the occasional bag of bark dust, I might stick with an automatic.
Now if I can just figure an adapter plate to fit an Eaton 13 speed to my van.

I would also vote for a manual tranny, specifically a 4-speed with an overdrive. That way a higher rear gear ratio would not suck on the highway.

I have used both in my 64 d100. I built it to race and also be streetable. I pulled the stock 3 speed and after solving many clutch and mouning problems got my 833OD in. I loved my 833OD but live in an urban area and it just got really old doing all the shifting. Understand I have never owned an automatic anything in my life. I got a new 727 from a forum member and decided to try it, particularly since it was basically a direct swap. I got a torque convertor from Midwest, added a deep oil pan, put in a tranny fluid temp gage and used a kevlar kit in it.

Well, I like it better than the 833OD! You talk about kick a-- off the start, and of course you don't miss a gear. I used a Hurst ratchet shifter and love em now. Fingertip control over shift point. Only the few times I have gone on a long trip did I miss the overdrive in the 833. I looked into Gearvendors OD for the 727 but for two trips on two years...naaah, not $2000 worth. Now for my money a built 727 is a hell of a good tranny.
