My oil lite came on last nite after beating on my motor.Ok I run 15w50 or something like that and the sender is at the pump. I hooked up the gauge today and I got about 8PSI at idle, takes a wile for it to come to that. And Max of about 35PSI.

When I shut the motor off it takes a good 10secs for the PSI to drop back down to zero. So what little PSI I have is holding well. Sound like the bypass valve maybe?

The stuck relief valve theory is easy enough to check by removing the plug at the lower front of the oil pump. If the barrel valve slides in & out freely, the problem is somewhere else.

Oil presure DOES grow on trees...

Im sitting at the light right by my work and im looking at the guage and its reading 5psi still. Im thinking about how much my motor must be hosed then just then the thing shoots up to 40psi....WTF

Started it and had 50PSI before I left for home just now. We had a new pump in stock for 39.99 so i got that, gona try and swap it. I dont know how many miles are on this pump so better safe then sorry. This is a Dyna-gear unit..DM66C

Now that sounds like a sticking oil pump releif valve. Like I say, this is a 15 minute fix, just take-off the plug, slide-out the valve and sand / clean things-up.
If you do pull-out the pump, take a real close look at the gear, if there are any signs of unusual gear tooth wear, let's get you a special case hardened gear. (the dyna gear pump gears are pretty hard, it is the Melling pump gears which seem soft)
