Post subject:  Clutch from the Slant Sickness car in Hot Rod (2001)

Hey.

Through an add in the paper and a trip to Steve Magnante's house I ended up with the clutch flywheel and pressure plate from that Duster. It was hardly worn when I got it so I just bolted it up and kept going. Now I need to replace the clutch and I'm not sure what I've got here. This is the only car I've ever put a clutch in so I need some advice. Should I:

1. have the flywheel resurfaced the wear is pretty even but kind of deep
2. Replace the friction disk and with what
3. have the pressure plate resurfaced or do I need to replace it.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to get active again. I'm making progress finally putting my sedan together. I'd like to have it running by fall.

Always surface the flywheel.

There are new options for clutches,,,,what size do you have now?

Spec clutch now has direct fit HD clutches - 9" diam IIRC. You can get the disc for the T5 spline or the 833 spline. Yes, I would use that flywheel and get it resurfaced.

Spec Clutch has a 9.5" clutch kit that fits the 122 tooth flywheel. They have it listed for 273s, but it works for us too. Spec made me a custom disc for my 5-speed swap at no extra charge.

Post subject:  Mike, Call me up. I have a flywheel I will give you

Mike,

Glad to hear thre is life in LA (Lower Apex). I have a flywheel I had Boyette's resurface not long ago. I will give it to you if you drive around the Beltline to Rock Quarry Road. I don't like the idea of reading about one with some "deep" scratching when I got one just sitting at rest. Do you need a large or small hub hole in it?

Since Southern States Dodge closed due to nationalization, the pressure plate bolts will take a little more work to obtain. I suggest using Allen head ones. When you are laying underneath they are soooo much easier to tighten if you are using a big clutch. If you get a problem, gimme a call. I can always let you know I probably had a similar problem once!

Post subject:  Hey Rock

The flywheel that I've got is stainless steel. I'll call Boyette's and see what they say. I also have a stock flywheel that I could use but it would need to be resurfaced too. I'm more concerned with the clutch and pressure plate. I'm probably going to end up making about 250 HP maybe less so a monster clutch isn't an issue. I am going to have a suregrip 3.23 with 245/45/17's so the clutch will probably do all of the slipping. I doubt I'll be breaking those baby loose too easly. Just trying to think before I buy. I'm dying to get this thing back on the road. I'll try and take some pictures this weekend and post them. Maybe this is a dumb question but I"ll ask anyway. Can you reuse the bolts on the pressure plate and the flywheel to crank bolts?

Not a dumb question at all, answer is you bet reuse them, unless they're looking kind of wore out :)

I use a little lock tight on the crank bolts. They are known to come loose.

STAINLESS FLYWHEEL???? Didn't know there was such a thing!

Most stainless steels are not as strong as low carbon steels at room temperature. Only at very high temperatures are they stronger than more common and less expensive steels. I would be very surprised if the flywheel in question is stainless as flywheels don't get nearly as hot as say exhaust valves. The Hot Rod magazine article stated the flywheel was billet steel.

I'm a little surprised this clutch wore out as soon as it did. Maybe it's had a lot of hard use.

I really beat the crap out of it and drove it daily in LA traffic. Most of the damage probably came from creeping over Topanga Canyon in bumper to bumper traffic on a very steep hill. Not the place for a stick but I got real good at heal toe and left foot breaking. I"ll post some pictures as soon as I can. It's shiny like stainless steel not dull like iron. Let me shoot some pictures so you can see what I mean. DD can chime in if he's out there. He and Steve Magnante put the thing together I think.

It is billet steel, I'm pretty sure, not stainless.

Post subject:  Yeah, It's billet

Now that I think about it is billet. it's pretty cool though. I hope it can be turned. If not, I have a stock one that's in real good shape on the shelf.

The hole in it is about 2.15".

Turning should be no problem.

Aw hell Mike. Maybe some beers will help!
Get that thing together. On second thought, maybe I should get my thing together!
