Post subject:  What to use on intake plug ?

At idle I have 15hg of vacuum and the gauge flickers slightly.
I am thinking the plug and the vacuum nipple I put on the intake might be the culprit , or one of. What is the best thing to use as a sealant for them , the tape or the sealant in the tube.
I have used the sealant , but it seems to run up the threads when I tighten it down .

Thanks for your replies

Ive had problems with both types...that being said what works for me is putting the dope type on a let it sit overnight then put it in. Seems to set up some then stay put better.

No sealant should be necessary; that's a tapered (pipe) thread that self-seals when you thread it in securely. If the plug or fitting you're using doesn't grow tight as you thread it in, it's not the correct thread and it'll leak.

That vacuum reading is low. Stock cam? Did the gauge flutter before?

Yes, that is a low reading and should be 18 or 19". Hook it up to the carb not the number 6 intake runner.

When was the last time you set your valves?

or does your motor have an after market cam with allot of overlap?

Ted , I have never set my valves, my motor has like 72,000 miles.

Dan, I am using some sealant because the vacuum tree that was in it was broke, and it took some messing with to get it out. It is just a just in case thing to eliminate it as a cause, but it does tighten

Frank , I was thinking about letting it sit overnight , so thanks for the info.

Rug Trucker ,everything is stock. it now read at 650 rpm it read 16hg, and at around 1000rpm it reads 19hg.

I will have to do some more investigating when I get a chance.

Thanks for all of your replies

On the valve adjustment , I guess if I have hydraulic lifters there is no need to adjust valves , is this right ?

Dave
you are correct

Unless your motor was swapped you should have solid lifters. 18-19 is a good idle vacuum.
