| Post subject: | Rearend Swap |
I want to swap my rear out for somthing of a better gear (3.23?) especially because I will eventually swap a 4 speed in, but I want to keep the sbp because I want to keep my cragars and I definatly cant afford bbp disc setup to use with an 8 1/4 rear. So, would it be worth finding an older rear to swap in, or to just replace the gear in my current 7 1/4? I would also like to get suregrip too. Does anyone still make gears for the 7 1/4? Also, I have never changed rear gears before, how hard would it be to do so? |

Read the factory service manual and you'll learn just how involved it is to change the ring and pinion. Sounds like you want a Sure-Grip 3.23 geared small bolt pattern 7 1/4 or 8 3/4. If you can't afford late disc brakes for the front you probably can't afford an 8 3/4 either. Are you really spinning the tires enough that Sure-Grip would be of benefit? |

Gears are available but the minimum ratio you can get now is 3.55. Jaws Gear has the best price; the gear set plus installation kit will run around $350.00. Check car-part.com for a used rear axle. |

A body with 3 speeds came with 3:23 in the 198 engines. That is what my Duster has. I will keep an eye out for one at Pull-A-Part. Yanked to 8 3/4's yesterday. One from a 74 New Yorker, the other from a 74 Maxivan. Rearends are around $100 tax and all. |

I don't need it, but it would be niceQuote: Yanked to 8 3/4's yesterday. One from a 74 New Yorker, the other from a 74 Maxivan. Rearends are around $100 tax and all.
Could you fit them under an A-Body though? I guess if I got one, I could sell it, and look for one that would fit.

If you grab an 8 3/4" out of something else (except the late 60's B-body),you'll have to have it shortened and have the axle shafts re-done...it's usually an amiable trade off...you can get a cheap C-body rear and do that or spend the same amount on getting a ready to fit A-body 8 3/4"... the C-body version would have the LBP if you resplined the axle shafts vs. the OEM A-body axle have SBP... which is nice if you decide to redo your front brakes to the 1973+ discs... -D.idiot |

Well pull a part has F bodies occasioanlly. They have 8.25's. You can check them on line. One thing about the one in Nashville........lots of the good Mopar stuff is gone before it hits the yard All the front disc assemblies are gone before they hit the yard. One of my last duties at Lowes was loading up 10 wheel barrows for the manager of Pull a Part. I told him how much I liked the place. Then asked about the Mopar stuff....he was silent! |

How much do you think and A-body 8 3/4 would be vs. a reworked C-body version?(cant do it myself) Also, would it be cheaper to find, and install gears in my 7 1/4 vs. and 8 3/4? I would like the bbp, but I would have to find bbp 14x6 cragars and sell my sbp ones, discs sure would be nice Quote: Well pull a part has F bodies occasioanlly. They have 8.25's. I pulled my super six out of an 79 Volare, I guess I shoulda snagged the rear too...One thing about the one in Nashville........lots of the good Mopar stuff is gone before it hits the yard There was also a 73 duster there too, most of the parts were gone, except a pair of practially mint tail lights and trim, I went back to get my tools (took maybe 5 min) and when I got back, they were gone! |

Didn't see that. He sure wants premium prices for crap. He has a bunch of ads for Mopars on CL. I had a kid call me on Saturday for the Ebody rear I have forsale. Wanted me to measure it If you want that rear you better call him quick! That kid that called me was 10 miles away. |
