I know everyone on here recomends going no larger than 2 1/4 on a stock slant (225) So thats what we told the guy at the muffler shop to do. Well when we went to pick the car up the guy asked me what size pipe did we want  I told him 2 1/4, he says oh. well I put 2 1/2 on it :( .
Well I was afraid we lost a lot of low end torque but MAN does that thing run now! Plenty of low end and the tighter you twist her up the harder she pulls!! 2.5 from the manifold with a flowmaster 40 and a chrome tip for $220 bucks. Dang thing sounds like a baby cummins when you wind it up

mine sounded like a baby cummins too..then I tightened the valves and cured it... :P ...Isnt it great to find that sound that you just love, makes driving a /6 even better....how about this..has any one ever heard of splitting the exhaust 4 and 2. I was talking to an old timer at the muffler shop and he had a few stories of the "old school" folks making headers that way. he said it had a kick a$$ sound..any one ever heard of it ( or done it???)

Hey Frank, or even Doc, do you think if we put Dutra duals with a flowmaster y-pipe it would give it more power? Future plans include a cam, HEI conversion here in about a week and maybe a small 4-barrel.

Yes. I would NOT go with a 4bbl yet. Go with a 2 bbl first. Unless you plan to be putting together a race engine a 4bbl is not neccessary.

Hey Ted, how's your '74 swinger run with the 254 cam and the 1 barrel? Any plans for a 2 barrel?

Very well given my reqmts. And yes, I have a 77 Carter two barrel ready and a Holley 4360 4 barrel Economaster ready. It will be the next swap I will make after doing some needed body work and paint. Let me explain.

I drive about 130 miles a day and I wanted to run 2.76 gears for best mileage. I did try 3.23 gears and lost 3 mpg on long trips. I have gone through 3 rear ends in 5 years and finally had a 8 3/4 posi. custom built from a "C" body to replace the 7 1/4. Lot's of twisty back roads on my commute......and the 254 puts out lots of torque between 600 and 2500 rpm. I cruise on the back roads at 2000 rpm right at peak torque which was killing the rear ends. My car never sees much over 2500 rpm on the freeway which is 60 mph. The cam works very well in that range. In fact, at the drag strip I never got 3,000 rpm at all. So the next step is to install the Weiand four barrel manifold and try the two barrel setup and four barrel setup.

I have run it up to 4000 on the freeway, but that was well over 90 mph. The engine is balanced and is very smooth at that rpm. It pulled good to 4000 and then flattened out. Time for more carb.........and more road....
Just driving around town the engine is extremely punchy with lots of snap. :D

Sounds like a sweet setup Ted, I was kinda floored when you said you went through 3 rears with that motor! Right now we are not going to raise the compression or do any work to the head.......yet 8) The car is my sons '64 Valiant daily driver. He was wanting to put a v-8 in it but after the power gains we got from the exhaust he has changed his mind and is now thinking the slant is cool! Hehe, looks like I won!

Yeah, the scrap yard was happy to see me a few years back when I turned in those three rear ends and the old stock 4.5" wide wheels.....

Wait till you get an adjustable Electronic Ignition distributor.......say one from 74 to 76. Recurving it will give you another big performance hit. If you think the exhaust made a big difference the recurve will really surprise you! and wake up the engine. Then there is the electric fan conversion.....another biggy in many ways, not just in engine snap (less drag) but also reducing heat soak. Another good mod for under $100.

I have looked for simple ways to make a near stock motor perform with out changing too much. Just minor refinements. I work so many hours on the new 787 that I just can't get to all the things I would like to do.

With the bigger exhaust installed I would love to do the four barrel conversion, then find a 489 case with 4.11 or so gears with a posi for racing against my sons Camaro. He want to see what this engine will do. :D By the way, my son has a V8, but is still surprised with the engine punch when he rides with me.

Hey, low end torque is where its at on the streets! Slantsixdan recomended buying a new distridutor from northwest auto parts # 742, as far as the recurve i have no idea how to do that, but i guess i'll learn! the electric fan is a good idea, we might try that also. Hell if we can get that old slant to keep up with my '04 hemi ram my son weill be happy and so will i! I bet we wont stop there though

Ya Ted I'd love that, if you could email it to me. basalmon@rogers.com

Maybe you could get it added to the articles section.

Thanks
Brent
