Hello, what is the travelling speed of a 170 slant 6 with 3 speed manual without destroing the engine ?
I have a 67 Valiant , assembled by hand in switzerland.

I too have a 67 Valiant,Australian version.it has the 225 engine. it will go a lot faster,and seems happy enough to about 75 mph,but really 60 is its "sweet" speed.

do you have some pictures of your car for us all to see?

Your car in good condition, especially the oil and cooling system condition, is relatively incapable of harming itself from speed alone. With the conservative factory state-of-tune the engine just won't run fast enough under load to hurt itself.

If your a pure ist plug your ears....If you want to do freeway speeds and have no RPM worries change the rear gears. I did, I put 2.76 in the rear end and a 3speed OD for trans. I can now do 90 MPH without even breathing hard. (of course a 10" clutch....and disk breaks...and..........

well i don't know on a 67, but my volare 78 super six can do without problems 100 mph and i think that it can at least do another 10-15 miles more without any kind of harm to the engine(i am quite sure of that because i did it here in mexico city and because of the height of the city all cars without turbo loose around 20 percent of their power)

Reaching a particular speed and cruising at that speed are different matters. 100MPH might be possible, but how long before it overheats?

I have no qualms about driving my Valiant at 70 MPH for a couple of hours at a time. I did it in April on a 600-mile weekend, and threw in about an hour of 75 MPH, and some time at 80 MPH - within the posted speed limits. Yes, I have good tires, reasonably fresh suspension, updated brakes, etc. 225, 904, 2.94, 205-60R15, EIEIO.

The temperature needle did move up - the higher speeds were later in the day and the load was obviously higher - but nothing requiring more than monitoring the temperature a little more often than usual.

That said, the engine seems more comfortable at 65-70, especially in the summer. FYI, we're about 3200 feet ASL in Lubbock.

A better radiator, a transmission cooler, and possibly an oil cooler be in order if I intended much higher cruising speeds.

well i agree with you slantvaliant i haven't run the car at 100mph for more than 15 minutes and it was at night and in winter(of course our winter nights are around 10 to 5 degrees celsius which is approximately 40-50 fahrenheit) without overheating problems, and i agree with you that at 70mph the car is completely comfortable.

And FYI Mexico City's altitude is 7,218 feet ASL

Valiant with original 83000km / 50000 miles. Original Paint, but you see the age there. It's not easy to keep a car in perfect shape in central europe with wet and salty roads.

From the picture, I would say you have done a good job with keeping it nice looking. A lot of cars here in Oregon look worse, and we don't use salt on our roads! They use gravel, sand or cinder here depending on where you are. But, we get a lot of rain here in the central valley area and that does lead to rust if you don't keep the moss from going wild on your vehicle.

By the way, I like your car.
