I was wondering your thoughts on an Erson cam selection. I have a 225 that will have a super six set up on it, big valve head with a port and polish job. I with eventually go with a Dutra duals 2 into 1 exhaust. I am going to shoot for a 9 - 9.5 to 1 compression ratio. The axle is 7 1/4 with 2.76 ratio. I am at present thinking of going with the RV15/244 combo. I just wanted to get some input before ordering. Thanks in advance Mike

Considering you are running the 2.76 gears, the cam you selected seems like it would work great. With your headwork, I could see it being a nice streetable package with a nice low end torque curve for street driving.

I am using the E254 grind with a 8 3/4, 2.76 Auburn posi in a 3600 pound car and find it to be a very powerful combination. Been running it for almost 3 years now. Around town is 23.5 mpg, trips are 25+ mpg on regular gas. The biggest effect in power comes from advancing the cam 4 degrees and recurving the distributor.

Im at the other end with the 280/270 cam. It seem to work great for that build.

I've already got my eyes out for a 8 3/4. As soon as I find one close by it will be mine.

Mike,

Very good! With the new found torque you will be much happier with a 8 3/4.
I even went as far as to use the 489 case... It will still twist even with the new 5 leaf springs. It is time for me to find a pinion snubber.

Anybody have a spare?

Will you use a higher stall converter? Personally, I would get the 280/270 cam and use a 26-2800 RPM stall converter.

In that case, the smallest cam I would even consider is the Erson 270/270, but the 280/270 will likely be better.

Lou and I are always on opposit ends of cam selection... he tends to lean to the "big is better" side and I tend to go with as small as possible... to get the job done.

For the discribed combo... with 2.76 gearing, keep the cam small to get more torque in the lower rpm ranges.

You will also have to watch the amount of stalll speed you use with the high rearend ratio. The converter needs to be off it's stall at your freeway rpm and I bet that is somewhere in the 2600-2800 rpm range with the 2.76

As a reference: 2200-2500 rpm is cruise at 60 mph depending on the grade on my Dart running 14" P225-60 BF Goodrich T/A Radials with a 2.76 8 3/4" posi.

With a 2.76 on the back roads where folks go too slow (30 to 40 mph) it is hard to keep at rpm to keep the converter locked at light throttle settings. If all you do is drive on freeways, then getting good mileage is much easier.

It kinda an East vs West thing.
Interesting enough is BOTH ways work,IF, you choose the rest of the combination correctly.

Gee, Doug, and I was going a little milder here...

In my experience a 2800-3000 stall (modern) converter will act almost just like a stocker until you stand on it, and then you will have the stall. I saw *maybe* 0.5-1 MPG drop going from a stock converter to a 2800 in mixed driving.
