how will a slant act when you have the vacuum advance hooked up to the manifold instead of the carb?

crash,

Really dead or flat with no punch.........

The reason is that the vacuum advance is pulled to full on when plugged into manifold vacuum. So it would be adding on top of the initial advance setting so you could be seeing over 20 degrees at idle.

If you set your initial with the advance unplugged, then plug it in the idle will run up and won't come down. You can run the idle screw off the stop and it will still be too high.

Too many SL6 engines are running this way and folks wonder why they have no power. They say the engine is gutless.....or flat.....down on power, or it pings right off idle, etc. Mileage will be horrible......

Always use ported vacuum for the advance for max performance and mileage unless your drag racing. At WOT I have my vacuum advance dialed out completely so it will not ping.

Thanks Ted, Man i got a lot of work to do then because thats how this slant is hooked up (manifold) and it has plenty of "punch", somethings screwy  I mean the engine runs fine other than its warms up a little to much at freeway speeds. Faster you go, hotter it gets, might be the timing

Yes, over timing will heat things up!

ok, just giving a step by step here, hooked the distributor up to the ported outlet on the carb, had to bump up the idle 3/4 of a turn. Engine runs good now, now difference in power but it warmed up more quickly (actually got hot) than normal. Hmmm, time to break out the timing light!

Shoot for at least 5 degrees and not over 10 for now. Run it this way for a tank and check the mileage.

I'll do that, Thanks Ted

Thanks from me too; that is what my slant was doing when I hooked up a Motocraft 2100. Didn't know the carb only had manifold vacuum.

Now I'm saving up for a Holley 2300.

Is the Holley 2300 a progressive 2 barrel also? I've been thinking a progressive 2 barrel would be the hot ticket on a mild slant. Hey Ted what's your thoughts on this? Anyone else running one on a slant?

The Holley 2300 is a sync 2bbl, both open at the same time. They can be had new from Holley and are of OK quality -- if you get one pull the bowl and metering block RIGHT AWAY and check for defects or metal chips embedded in the gaskets.

crash922108,

Some of the racers really like the 2300, since it comes in 350 and 500 cfm.
Some of the guys have gotten into the 13 second range.
I have not tried one yet.
