I can't imagine the weight saving of plastic over metal in the piston caliper would be worth the added risk of failure. Maybe I am old fashioned and paranoid, but I like my brake parts to be as heavy duty and failure proof as possible.

Phenolic caliper pistons are lighter and they're supposed to be less prone to corrosion problems. They also should transfer less heat to the piston.

When I looked into it a few years ago, there was a suggestion that the phenolic pistons were more likely to stick or chip. I went with metal.

The last time I went around on this a few years back, I had found that if you want to keep the metal piston, you will have to recondition your own calipers. Everybrand I could drum up for a set for rebuilt single piston calipers came with phenolics. I've been using a set of phenolics in the duster now for a few years and they work fine even under heavy duress with the aggressive brake pads I installed.

2 more cents...
