I have a 61 D300 that smokes profusely.  I want to put another slant into it while I rebuild the original. I found a good engine in a 79 Volare. I noticed that the starter is mounted completely different. Will I be able to swap this in and what will I need to change? Both are standard trannys (four speed truck and three speed car).Thanks, Ziggy |

Ziggy Oil Pan and Oil Pickup is all you have to change. The Clutch may have some issues as the crank register changed in 67. I will bow on this issue to some one who runs a stick. Frank |

the 68 and later crank is bigger where the flywheel goes on...will need to cut the truck flywheel so it will fit and then get a spacer made to refit to old engine after rebuild |

Is there a flywheel that will bolt on to the 79 engine and work with the 61 fourspeed? Thanks, Ziggy |

ziggy, it not too hard to cut center of flywheel, and get it refaced at same time....shop can also make spacer so you can put old engine back in simple easy way to do it keep on roddin' |

Scott, Will a 79 truck flywheel work with the 61 truck 4 speed? If so, great, I will go find one. I had heard that the balance may have changed on the engines between 61 & 79. If so, cutting and rebalancing may be a lot of trouble and if I don't get it right the engine will just about walk off of the mounts. An other issue is the bolt holes. Do I need to have them redrilled??? The engine has only 43K on it, but sat for many years. Do you think I can hone the cylinders and put it back together with new rings & seals and solve the problem or is it more likely to need a complete rebuild? Thanks, Ziggy |

Hi Ziggy, My appologies. I thought you already had the flywheel from the '79. If you have access to the flywheel that was with the newer engine, then I think I would just compare it to the truck flywheel and see if they are the same or close enough. I have not done this swap, so I don't know if this will work or not. I was mainly throwing the question out there to the group to see if anyone has done this before. Maybe you will have better luck if you ask on the transmission forum. At any rate, please share your findings with the group. Scott. |

Ziggy, There is an article on clutches in the articles section that may shed some light on your situation. If your truck has the low mount starter, it may have the 11 inch 143 tooth flywheel. If that is the case I think your only option may be to machine the existing flywheel to work with the newer engine and then use a machined spacer to go back to the older crank. Another option would be to use a newer '68 up forged crank when you do your rebuild and avoid using the spacer. Perhaps someone more knowledgable can chime in and confirm if this is correct. Scott. |
