Post subject:  wont stay running without holding the gas

topic says it. i was driving to a local junk yard, and the main entry way was a little bumpy. i bounced a little bit and i think it might have hit the oil pan. i checked under it for leaks or obvious damage, i couldn't see anything blatantly wrong with it. so i parked it went in and after i came out it fired right up and drove fine. had to make another trip back there and as soon as i pulled in it died. restarted it, kept wanting to die.. i had to hold on the gas in neutral to get home. i tried replacing the ballast but it does nothing. she starts but just wont stay alive by itself. i have a good coil/plugs/wire/cap/rotor. it is very hot here in salem..around 100. but im not over heating. any chance it could be affecting something? vapor lock?

its possible. but as long as i hold the gas it runs smooth. last time i had a vacuum leak even if i managed to keep it running it would be rough. i will check though. im wondering if my idle circuit in the carburetor is clogged. (thor was suggesting that)

Sounds like the ethanol is eating your fuel lines and you got a chunk stuck in the wrong place inside the low speed mixture circuit. You may have to take the economiser body off and blow it and the carb out.

Take your time cleaning it out.

well, THOR managed to get it running, he revved the engine and quickly covered and released his hand. and it started running better so i do believe it had some blockage. its running now i just need to adjust to air mixture.

well it was running OK, but the engine was really wobbly. the more i turned the idle screw counter clock wise the less it shook. now it just runs like crap. not sure if i got more junk coming back from my gas tank or what. :?

well it turns out it was just me having the idle set screw in the wrong place this time. it seems that when you turn it to far clockwise the engine starts to shake alot and runs choppy/not good. i slowly turned the idle screw back until it smoothed out. once it did the car ran without hesitation. got it up to operating temprature and put a load on it. no stalling or bucking. thanks for all suggestions.

Hey,

I had exactly the same thing happen to me once on a 74 Valiant.

The jostling of going over the bumps has filled your float bowl with dirt and junk... likely from the tank.

If you pull your carb apart you'll find a nice layer of junk in the bottom of it.

Go ahead and change your fuel filter as well.

well unfortunately somehow, the accelerator pump on my carter is in need of replacement. no gas pumping at all. i wasn't able to find a rebuild kit for it in town (go figure). so i rebuilt the Holley. replaced the accelerator pump, carburetor bowl gasket, replaced the fitting that bolts into the side of the carb along with the needle/ i can't remember the name of it, but behind the small square removable section i replaced that component as well. it actuates with the throttle to engage the pumping action for gas i believe. well anyways back on track. it starts and runs great. sometimes on take off i get a little bit of stumble but most other times it takes off just fine in third gear. so really other than that it runs good. not sure what would cause it to do that. im going to keep adjusting it as time goes on. if anyone has an idea as to what would cause the stumble/rough take off let me know.

Bob,

Not a big enough pump shot. You need to make sure all the slop is out of the accelerator pump linkage and and the diaphragm is in good shape. It needs to move freely and not hang up. Also clean out the discharge nozzle. I actually made mine a hair bigger with a long tapered reamer.

My 1920 Holley puts out such a healthy pump shot it will break both tires loose.

well i took it off again. double checked. nothing was clogged at all. made sure i installed metering block correctly. got a little better shot this time but it could just be me thinking it. at this point ive tried alot of different things. vacuum ignition etc. im going to check with a couple machine shops here in town and see if i can get it re bushinged. im 100% confident that i have ruled out other possibilities. the symptoms dont match up to ignition/points/plugs. anyways. il get back to you once i get more info. thanks all.
