Post subject:  New head gasked got bent during shipping...
I ordered a new head gasked from Rock Auto. The package was folded over during the shipping process. The gasket is visibly creased. Is this gasket unuseable? Will it fail to seal if installed?

I contacted Rock Auto before opening the outside packaging. They've already offered a refund or replacement. I'm in no special hurry to do this job so I can wait for a new gasket.

Have them send you a new one. If you get to keep the old one you can use it for measurements. If the fire rings are bent it will most likely Not seal.

Thank you, Frank. Yes, the fire ring is dimpled on two sides for the number four cylinder.

This type of thing always happens to me. More so, since my upstairs neighbor started a war with UPS. With something like a head gasket, I would think of the cost of a new one vs. doing the job twice. That's the kind of thing where it would make sense to get another relatively inexpensive item even if I had to pay for a new one. Today I'm taking out a transmission for the 5th time this summer, this time because I tried to re-use a contaminated clutch disc. On the plus side, my elapsed time for trans. removal is decreasing. 8)

That's exactly how I feel. My dad said I should just go ahead and try it. I don't think so!
