Post subject:  3.23 gears for 7.25

My question concerns the interchangability (is that a word?) of the gears from a pre '70's 7.25 to a 1980 7.25 rear end.

The following is copied from a July 2001 message:

The year(s) are important here. All "early" 7 1/4s used pinion "shims" where "later" ones used a crush sleeve and carrier bearing "adjuster rings". (started in 1970??) For an easy gear swap, you want to use the gears designed for the housing set-up you have.

Does this mean swapping pre '70's 3.23 gears into my '80 rear would be impossible or just difficult?

Difficult because you would have to find (make) all the needed shims to get the mesh set correctly. Realize that it's been 30+ years now on a rearend that was not "liked" by most everyone. Can you say "hard to find parts"??

When it comes to rearends it's much better / cheaper to find the ratio you want in an assembled unit and swap the entire assembly.

Thanks for the reply, Doug. I'm getting to the point that I may decide to put an 8.25 in there anyway. I'll make that decision soon.
