| Post subject: | torque converter question/suggestion |
Its finally time to buy a torque converter for my 75 dart custom. This is the first time buying a torque converter and have a few questions. About the car. 1975 dodge dart custom four door, Motor 79 block with lightened cast crank rebalanced bottom end held together with arp rod and main bolts. 10.50 to 1 compression ratio, erson 280-270 .465 lift cam. Head has been ported and pollished and shaved for compression, home made long runner intake with 500 cfm edelbrock carb, home made hand built 3 into 1 headers. Transmission is a rebuilt 904 v8 internals with street strip shift kit. Rear axle is a 8.8 inch ford with 31 spline shafts 3.73 gears and factory traction lock limited slip. Rear tires are 27-11r17 drag radials. Car will be driven on street every now and than but mostly at the track and may see some spray in the future. Need some input on stall speed and size of converter. also brands price verse quallity and what do i really need to spend. Thanks cory |

Is this engine built already? Sounds like a lot of good work if so. I would get a 3000 stall 9.5" or 10" converter from Midwest Converters or PTC or the guy in FL that Bren bought from (search site). This will let you use your engine's power and yet be very streetable. 3000 stall will act almost like stock until you stand on it... Lou |

You will need to tell the converter Manuf. you are using NOS and how much. Frank |

If you launch the car on spray, any converter will stall higher then non spray. You need to discuss all of this with the converter builder. I had a converter built, and I specified spray. When I first tried it for testing without spray, I was not happy. My old conveter, which was for stock eliminator racing launched better, without spray. But when on spray the new converter was better then the old one on spray PS: my 170 engine on spray has 358 ft/lbs at 2750 rpm on a chassis dyno, and the converter stalls at 3,000 rpm. |

Get the bugs worked out, then take the car to the track. Make a couple of runs, weight the car, and tell the converter people, this info. They will be able to get a close approx of the HP, and torque, and build the converter based on that.

i just put a boss hog torque converter in my duster fairly radical build with nos and i put a 2800-3200 stall and was not happy. next week put a 3800-4200 stall in and what a differance. the thing is an animal. they also have a 3200-3600stall. if you want a good converter and cheap i would get one of these. i called midwest and they wanted 875 with shipping. my boss hog was like 380 or 450. i would recommend you get either the 3200-3600 or the 3800-4200 |
