Found an 87 /6 to potentiall swap into my 78 pickup. Any advantages or disavantages going from the solid lifter to hydraulic lifter engine? Would this engine have the crank drilled for a pilot bearing (currently has an auto tranny)? |

In my opinion there would NOT be any advantage to swapping. Valves arent that hard to adjust and dont need it that often. The quality of products in 87 is questionable so the crank may not be drilled. However that can be overcome with a different pilot bearing ( I think from a Dakota) so this should not be your determining factor. Frank |

Thanks for the quick response. I'm aware of the adjustment process for valves-and have done engine rebuilds/swaps in the past. My reason for asking-was to see if the hydraulic lifter engines were any more or less durable than the solid lifter versions, and if this would be a bolt in swap after all the emissions systems are removed. Will this block bolt to my bell housing, and will my flywheel fit this crank? If this will fit I would use my supersix setup and solid state distributor to get rid of the lean burn setup (if so equipped). I haven't seen the 87 engine yet, and before I make the trip to check it out I wanted to make sure it would be compatible w my pickup w/o extensive modificaitons. Been looking for a 68-78 good engine w/o luck. Thaks |

It boils down to your choice. Both versions are durable. Both engines are totally interchangable as to crank register size and bolt on assys. Frank |
