Hello All, Got the '64 Signet converted back to push button from floor shift and got a couple small problems concerning shifting. The first one is when shifting into R or D from N I get the loud clunk as if the u-joints were bad, however the u-joints are new. What else could cause this and is it an easy/inexpensive fix? The second problem is the one that concerns me the most. After shifting into D and taking off it seems that somewhere around the time it's gonna shift from first to second I get this quick "click,click,click" sound as if the thing just finally made it into Drive. Strange thing is, all shift positions appear to work as they should and once rolling it shifts from 1 to 2 to 3 so smooth that I can't hardly feel it go thru the gears. Any suggestions what this could be? Do I need a little more adjustment from the shift cable? Would I adjust the cable in or out? Could this be a Park cable adjustment? First question what is your idle speed?Second question is what year trans?I have read that to set the cable adjustment for the push button set up takes two people.One to hold the "R" button fully depressed and the other to do the adjustment.Do you have a factory service manual for your car? |

I agree on the idle speed, yet how close is your exhaust to the driveshaft? |

Don't know what year tranny it is. Not sure of the idle speed either without putting a tach on it as there is not one currently installed in the car however, it idle so smooth that when setting at a stoplight you can't tell if the car is running or not so I would assume the idle is low enough. I do have a FSM and adjusted per the instructions. This clicking sound happens some times around 5mph and sometime around 30 mph. I say "around" because the speedo is one of the things I have yet to fix. This isn't a rattle per say as this never happened before changing from floor shift to push button. Tried moving the adjustment wheel clockwise a hole or two at a time but doesn't seem to make a difference. Thinking this Saturday I may get it back off the ground, pull the pan and try to adjust it that way. Only problem is, I won't know if I solved the problem or not until it's all back together and driving again. Jeff[/quote] |

What kind of floor shift did you remove? Did you change anything on the trans when you converted to the PB? The only cable floor shifter I have seen is the stock 1965 Mopar unit. If this is what you removed, you must also change out, or modify the valve body, to use the PB shifter. There were some after market cable shifters, back in the '60-70s, but I don't remember ever seeing any. Thank you Charrlie S. It's guys like you with the knowledge and willingness to help the rest of us that make this site go great. Talking to Charrlie on the phone made everything clear and got my shift problem sorted out. Wound up being the park adjustment that was a hair off. Finished adjusting park and then went back over the shift adjustment and she rolls smooothe now. Thanks again Charrlie S. !!!!! Jeff |
