I've been busy and haven't been hanging here. Any news on Eileen? I heard it was in a Dakota smoking a bit. Anything else to report? |

Hi Bren, Thanks for asking. It is humming along in my daily driver 1990 "Slantkota" pickup. I replaced all but the back 2 valve guide seals (firewall interference) with viton posi-lock seals and that cut down the smoke by about 60-80%. The engine started and ran fine on the first turn of the key after installation. All I did was bolt on my trusty 500 CFM Holley 2bbl and get a new exh front section done off the headers. 2X2" into a single 2.25", so that is likely limiting things. I took it to the N. Wilkesboro Slant 6 race and ran 10.76 @65MPH best, but with the 1800 stock stall converter and crappy trans shifting (couldn't rev past 3800 or it would stick in gear), I think that was really hurting things. Also haven't played with jets at all. I did go to the semifinals with it on its first dragstrip outing! I did drive it up to Maine before that with no problems and it averaged 19 MPG at 70+ MPH for the trip. Got as high as 20-21 MPG. It used a quart of oil about every 250 mi (before valve seals). Last week, I put a stout 904 and Hughes 11" 27-30 converter in, which static stalls at 2400 - perfect. Now I can manually shift up to any RPM too. I'll take it to the Bristol Slant 6 race starting tonight and get some 1/4 mile passes on it. My guess is it'll run around low 10s/high 9s in the 1/8th and 16 flat in the 1/4 with the new trans/conv and maybe some tuning. Truck now has a 2.76 sure grip rear, which is great for hwy, but of course not so great for drags. Hums along at around 2800 @ 75 MPH. It sure does have some torque, which is nice since I'll be using this truck to tow my racecar "Project V" next year. Next up is to install a little bigger cam (234/228 @0.050" from Oregon Cams). That should also help with oil puffs off idle and add some HP. I may also try a different carb (Carter AVS 500 or Hly 350 2bbl or 390 4bbl)?? Reworking the exhaust would be next with a real Y-pipe (hack job from shop) and 2.5" or 3" out the back. Down the road, I may swap in an A500 auto I have and run 3.55 or better rear gears. After the cam swap, I will assess oil usage decide whether to pull it apart and put std rings in it. Actually I may ask you for a few more numbers on the motor at some point. Happy motoring, Lou |

Sounds like she is doing good for ya aside from the oil usage. I ran a 26" tire with 3.55 gear and a 904 with a .78 Gear Vendors over drive and the highway was pretty good. Turned 3300ish at 80 MPH with a 29-3000 stall converter. (400 rpm drop if I let off the throttle a little) If you decide to run the A500 I'd put 3.70-3.90 ish gears in it. I beleive the A500's and 518 have a .68 overdrive. Do the A500's have a lockup converter? |

I have an A500 in my '68 Dart w/225. Lockup and 3.55 gears with 24.5" tire works well. 0.693 OD ratio... Lou |
