Got a quick question once I dissassembled my '76 225 for a rebuild and got her all cleaned up and noticed a strange gouge (?) in the #2 piston so should I be worried ? I checked the valves, non of them are chipped of gouged and spin freely with springs removed.-Mike |

Looks to me like the manufacturer added that "feature" when the top of the new piston was machined. I can hear the machinest now... "that wont hurt anything, it's good". DD |

That one spiral gouge is typical of worn out automatic machining mechanism that failed to retract cutter correctly after facing the top of piston. Run it. Cheers, Wizard |

It will add swirl to the mixture in the chamber resulting in better mileage and more horsepower. GM called it Vortec. |

really zilla, WoW not lol, but how much deck is available on stock pistons ? Is it better to have glass smooth tops on the pistons or those "rings" that are machined ok to have ? -Mike |

Actually the Vortec had the swirls cast into the intake runners. I would not worry about marks in the piston tops as long as long as they are not too deep. |

maybe try to get another piston if your worried about it? I would. there is a perfectly good explaination why it has that mark on the top: aliens have visited your engine and are performing crop circles on the top of your pistons.... |
