Post subject:  Timing problem. Need Help!

I was attempting to set the timing on my '69 Valiant. The mark moves back and forth by itself with the distributor firmly bolted down. Even with the valve lash properly adjusted, the car sounds like a diesel when accelerating and the power just isn't there. I went through something like this with an Oldsmobile shortly before I broke a timing chain. Is this my problem? I pulled the distributor and the teeth looked OK. I'd really appreciate some input from anyone who has had this problem or knows what it is.

This could be caused by a worn distributor shaft, did you have a chance to try the other distributor I sent you? If both distributors do the same "bounce" thing, then I would test for timing chain slop. (rock the engine back and forth while looking at the distributor rotor)
Also note that any mis-fire will make the timing mark "jump around".
