I had some problems with my trans that i had built by a good shop in california, brought it back to him and he says that the converter i put in was the problem. It was to long and pushed the pump back which ate it up, and burnt up the tranny. Has this happened to anyone else? TF |

Tristen I have "heard" of some converter manufactures having this problem. I have yet to see one with my own eyes. I think it had to do with old vs new crank register and spline count. Frank |

Yes, I have had this happen, twice. The first time was back in the '70's. The converter was made for use with an rear engine plate, by mistake. It put too much pressure on the pump, and ate the pump on the first pass. The company (Fairbanks) repaired the converter, and gave me all the parts to rebuild the trans, at no charge. They also explained how to check for proper fit. 1) make sure the converter is seated in the trans. 2) when bolting the trans to the engine, do not force the trans to the engine with the bolts. 3) When the trans is almost seated to the engine, make sure the converter will turn freely. 4) when the trans is fully bolted up to the engine, you should have to pull the converter to the flexplate about 1/8 inch (actual dimension is not critical), to make sure there is no pressure on the pump. If there is no clearence/float to the flexplate, either the converter is not seated in the trans, the pilot on the converter is the wrong size (will not fit the crank), or the converter is too long. If the pilot is too long or bottomed in the crank, there might be clearence to the flexplate, but there will be no "float". Do not install the converter bolts and pull the "ears" on the flexplate to the converter, the converter should slide right up to the flexplate, by hand. The second time was with my Edge converter. It was the first converter they had made with the large input splines, and the small pilot, and the pilot was too long. When I informed them of the problem, they OK'ed my cutting the pilot shorter, with a cutoff tool. Then when the racing season was over, I pulled the converter, returned it for the proper repair. They paid shipping, did the repair, asked if I wanted any changes made, and extended the warrentee. Even sent me a couple of "T"- shirts. All no charge. |

So you could say that you've "been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.
