That is in interesting tid-bit on Lean Burn. Spring of 1976 we purchased a 1976 Cordoba equipped with a 400 cid, 4v, and Lean Burn engine management. There was a problem with engine knock before there was 5000 miles on the clock, a factory service bulletin corrected the problem under warrantee. The car returned 19 to 20 mpg on the highway as long as we owned it, six years, and never quit but once when the ballast resistor failed. It was a great running car, and for its time, one of the fastest easily twisting the 100 mph speedo needle way past the 100 mark. I know 33 years later, Lean Burn is not very desirable, but who is still using their mid seventies “Hi-Fi†equipment these days??? In 76 it was state of the art, and a big tank that got 20 mpg during those gas crunch days was not bad. |

Back in 1979 we went to look for a car for Mom. We test drove a Dodge Magnum. We weren't real sure we'd make it back to the dealership! I remember being stuck on the side of the highway until they could send another salesman to come get us. We went across the street and rode home in a new LTD II. I remember the early days of electronic fuel management, and they weren't exactly great, no matter what the make or model. But mopar seemed to especially suck far beyond the others. Guess that's the risk with innovation; sometimes it works, sometimes...not so much. |
