 Post subject: Holley 1920 problem!!

Well, I rebuilt the carb on my '69 Valiant and the car was running great! More pickup than it's had since I got it. My wife and I took it out for a drive and after a few miles the car started to idle roughly at a stop sign and we both smelled gas. I hurried home to find gas all over the carb body and the manifold!! How we avoided a fire, I don't know! I started up the car today to see what was going on. There are no leakes in the fuel line or the fuel bowl. The car starts to sputter and smoke and the gas appears to be flowing from the fuel bowl vent. This only happens when the engine is hot. The carberator is rebuilt. It's an aluminum body 1920 with the older rubber stopper type vent. When I took the carb apart, The float was set in the middle of the bowl. When I rebuilt it, I turned the carb upside down and adjusted the float level as per specs provided with the kit. My manifold heat control valve seems to be jammed open, however, this was not an issue before the carb was rebuilt. This all started after the rebuild. What should I do? This is a new problem for me and a scary one!

Sounds like a piece of dirt got into / onto the needle valve / valve seat or the float itself is defective and is "taking-on fuel".
I would clean-out the needle valve as a start and see if that cures the problem.

Yep.
Also check to make sure that you didn't cross thread the new seat when you screwed it into the carb body.

Also, as Doug said, you could have a bad float. Put it in a small container of gasoline and seee if it sinks over time.
