My '63 Valiant has the original speedo pinion gear.I will be upgraging to a larger wheel-14x 5 1/2". The best recommended tire size is P205/70/14. This requires a change in the pinion gear.Does anyone know which gear to use? Availability? bingk@webtv.net |

Gears are easy to get sometimes through your local Transmission dealer or Year One, your local mopar dealer may have a few on the shelf but they don't normally stock them since the latest and greatest use a sensor (go figure...). I ran into this problem not long ago trying to find a 38 toother for my up and coming gear change. Many here should have a quick "ref" chart to say what you need. We just need to know what your rear axle ratio is? (2.76:1, 3.23's?, 4.56's?) With that and your 205's some one can give your the color and tooth count of the gear you need. (Do you know what your current gear is?) thanks, -D.Idiot |

If they are the same as the new ones then you can still get the gear new from mopar. The gear looks like the same one used in my 1991 with the sensor. Gears are easy to get sometimes through your Quote:

My local dealership doesn't carry them , since the 1997+ models don't use the gear in the tranny they use a mag pickup that tells the instruments and eprom how fast you're going... tricky. voodoo eprom magic from daimler... -D.Idiot |

The early speedo gears for the cable transmissions are getting hard to find and there are only 5-6 gears to choose from. I would first try the new tires and see how much error you get. Here is a chart on the early speedo gears: DD Link to Speedo Gear Message

That's the problem, '60-'65 transmissions use completely different (smaller, less numerous) pinions that are NOT interchangeable with the '66-up system. DS redbear@vrx.net |
