Ok today i was curious on what rear end i had and was expecting a 7 1/4...but that doesnt appear to be what it looks like. It would be great if it was a 8 1/4, but i took some pics for you guys to help me out. Its a 10 bolt.

10 bolt usually means an 8 1/4, but there are a few exceptions. What year vehicle did that axle come from? Any chance you can pressure wash the housing off and take another picture or two?

Its a '72 Dodge dart, everything on the car is how it came when i bought it about 7 months ago, so i have no idea what car it may have come off of if it were to have been swapped out. I dont know anyone who has a pressure washer, but ill see what i can do to clean it and get better pictures.

What size bolt pattern are the wheels? Someone correct me if I am wrong. I think all 8 1/4 rears are large bolt pattern. If you have the small 5 on 4 inch bolt pattern, it must be a 7 1/4 rear (the pictures show it is not an "A" 8 3/4). If it is the large bolt pattern, it could be either 7 1/4 or 8 1/4.

I dont know what the bolt pattern is on the car. could be 5 on 4.
But, since it is a 10 bolt and if it is a 7 1/4, could it be upgraded to an 8 1/4 without having to get an entire new axle or housing?

Looks to be a 7.25 diff......are the driver's side wheel studs left-hand thread?

Yep, I agree with Roger. Looking closely at the profile, it looks like a 7 1/4.

Hmmm...right hand studs on the left side of a '72. Seems I recall Mopar was still using reverse thread on that side in '72, but they could have been changed out at some time.
Even with the grunge on the rear cover, that sure looks like it's a 7.25, judging from the pictograph that Reed posted.

To go to the 8.25, you'd have to round up a complete rear assembly, preferable from an A-body. (One from an F-body may fit there too, but I'm not qualified to say it will.)

measure the axle tubes at the spring mounts. If they are 2 1/2" it is a 7.25; if they are 3" ir is an 8.25.

There is no practical way to convert a 7.25 to a larger gear set.

Hey, I got one of those too! A small-bolt pattern 2.76 gear ration 7 1/4 rear axle. Buy mine and you can have a pair!

Thanks, but im looking for a 8 1/4 - 8 3/4 3.73 rear end, there just a whole lot of money lol
that with a 4bbl and headers/duals would make for decent performance.
