As I recall, all slant harmonic balancers are interchangeable...even between cast and forged crank models. Is that correct?

Post subject: Mine just came apart!!

I've heard of it happening but in 25 years of driving a slant 6 I've never seen it. My motor has about 800 miles on it now. I was driving down the freeway at around 80 when the temp suddenly shot WAY up. I pulled over and shut it off. I looked under the hood and saw that the fan belt was off. I've never seen one of those jump off without breaking but I figured I'd just put it back on so I grabbed my tools from the trunk and proceded to do some roadside wrenching. Upon closer inspection I saw that the the pully on the damper was WAY out of alignment with the water pump pulley. YIKES! I hate calling AAA but I wasn't going to fix it on the side of the road.

Question: My block is one of those rare 030 castings with a forged crank. Will the damper from my old (early 70's) crank work? The timing mark on the busted damper was on the passenger side not the drivers like my old damper. Are all of the cranks keyed the same and the dampers are different?

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, all SL6 cranks are keyed the same.
Which timing mark are you using, a bolt-on or one welded to the t-chain cover?

When I put my engine together the cover had the welded on marks but I had the marker from my old engine so I put it on too. I lined up the engine at TDC and marked the 0º mark on the damper where the bolt-on one was and marked it with a small cut with a hack saw. My idea was that I could see the timing from either side. I just had a thought, would it be helpful to put a mark at 30º?
