I got one of these trans for a while now laying around. talked to brewers on a rebuild kit but am thinking of making it a non o/d seeing it is a matter of changing the gears set.has anyone done this and what were the end results.I like the idea of 3.09 first but not sure I like the wide ratio.

FYI, you can't change to a non-OD gearset without changing the main shaft.

I don't see any question relating to longevity in your original post. What is your question?

from what I have heard the o/d trans has a history of problems behind hot v-8's.I know I'm not running a v-8. but my tires are 27 tall and my gear ratio is 4.10 I'm just wondering if anyone has done the change from o/d to non o/d and had problems with it do to the fact that when in fourth gear the rpms are higher.my duster at 65-70mph is taching around 4,000 verses if it was o/d it would be around 2,000.

I have a 4 speed a-body. It has a smallblock, but for the purposes of your question I think it is relevant.

When I got the car it had a close ratio 833 with 26" tires, 4.11 gears, and a really beat 318 (like less than 200hp). It was fun to drive with the stickshift, great in town, would do a smoky burnout etc. On the highway it was a little buzzy but not crazy- usually around 3500rpm.

After a while I put the car in my garage and re-did almost everything. I put in a hot stroker motor and 28" tires. With this setup I had lots of torque all over and the close ratio was still fun, but it was annoying to shift three times and then be in fourth around 45mph. I wanted another gear and I wasn't really using the close ratios to maintain a narrow power band for good acceleration.

So I put in an 833od trans. For the street this trans is perfect. The low first gear rips off the line, shreds the tires at will. The second gear is good for little boulevard speed contests or 25mph roads with traffic. Third gear is good for all normal driving, slow highway driving, and passing anything on the highway. Fourth gear is relaxing for cruising, even on I95 where 70mph is normal. 65mph is 2300 rpm. Around 95mph the motor is just hitting its sweet spot around 3500!

I also have a /6 pickup with the 833od. It has 1/4 the power of the smallblock, but since the torque is all down low you can just short shift it and cruise. I like the spread. The first three gears work just like a regular auto 3spd and the fourth is good on the highway.

Does that help?

thank you, sounds like leaving it an o/d is a better way to go.also seems the people I have talked to just didn't like them.becouse if it has no problem with the torque of a stroker motor it will be fine with mine.thanks again
