Post subject:  Biggest tires on 1964 Valiant?

Hey, i found some 14" wheels that fit my bolt pattern from a newer valiant and want to buy some BFG Redline radials to match my red paint.

Since the A903 tranny only has 3 gears i wanted to put the biggest tires on the rear as possible to lower my highway RPM's.

From what i understand i should be able to fit 205/70/14s on the rear (given my ride height is close to stock) and 185/70/14s on the front without hitting anything while cornering.

Is this a realistic approach? I want to have the rear lifted up a bit for that staged look.

thanks,

November 5th (edit) - I don't mean to press this question to hard since suspension geometry isnt the same across the board, but I am ordering Firestone Winterforce tires for my valiant this year since winter driving in Canada is a bit of an art :p

This is the size list:

I believe i have 185/75/13s right now, and it looks like theres a couple inches all around when its just sitting.. but the suspension is original from what i can tell (shocks blown).

I'm running 205-60R15's all around on my '64 Valiant 4-door sedan. The rims are 15X7's with a +13mm offset. They clear well, but with the taller tires mentioned you might want to look at the lower front corner of the front wheel opening. In turning, that can be a tight spot.

How would a 205-60R15 compare to a 205-70R14 in diameter and width? It sounds like it would be close, maybe a bit more narrow.

You must have the 5x4.5 bolt pattern spindles/hubs from a 72+ A-body?

Search by tire size, then check the specs. Width, diameter, are all provided.

Here's a cool calculator for quick and easy comparisons.

Stock diameter equivalent of the Bias 6.50 13 tires is 185/80 13....

What the rim width?

For 14 x 5.5 you can use a 195 /70 14 or 205 /70 14 tire (the 195 is the same diameter as the 185/80, the 205 tends to correct the speedo with its slightly larger diameter)

If they're 14x4.5 rims, the largest usable tire is 185/75 14 (almost identical diameter to the 195/70)

I have 24.97" dia. tires (225/45r17) up front any larger and they would hit the front of the wheel opening and 26.74" dia. (225/55r17) in the rear. They both fit nicely.

I do not know about 9" caps. There are no hub cap retainers on the rims.

I cut out the center section of the original 14" valiant hub caps that came with the car. And welded a 4" bolt to the center. Then drilled and taped a hole in the center of the axle to screw it into. On the front I need to make some kind of retainer like they have on the old wire hub caps (the ones that look like spiders and fit over the hub. Have to work that one out later.
