Ok , here we go . The trans went out on my low milage 78 Aspen (36k) . I do tend to carry a few hundred pounds in the trunk at all times . Ive been doing some reading on this site and it looks like Id be better off getting a trans from a mid 80s model .
Any suggestions . Do I look for one out of a car or do I look for one of those t904s out of a truck or van ? And then would it be beneficial to put a shift improver kit in it before installation ?
Thanks in advance Jim

A 904 is plenty strong. I would just rebuild yours or send to several members here that do rebuild them. No difference in "truck" or car 904's. Shift kit???? are you racing it? V8 internals in a slant 6 case are good insurance. Some one on Ebay in Texas has "NEW" 904's for $350.
Just some thoughts,
Frank

The only difference between a 90T and a 904 is the wide-ratio gearset in the 904T and possibly the 904T has a lockup torque converter that your Aspen doesn't, but a 78 Aspen might actually have a lockup torque converter. 904Ts are nice for acceleration, but the gearset won't make that big of a difference.

You could buy a brand-new transmission for $350:

Post subject:  trans

1978 was the first year for lock-up trans,78-79 L-U trans had plenty of problems and are nice transmissions to avoid.Dodge started putting 904s in light duty pick-ups in 1982.They all have L-U,and wide gearset. They also had 1 more clutch disk per drum assembly then then the "car" trans. This is why people say the truck trans is better, but the l-u converter can still cause you problems. Most likely, the l-u converter failed first, and plugged the trans cooler with clutch material, causing the trans to fail.My advice is to find a pre-1977 trans and converter and rebuild that. Also be sure to flush the trans cooler, and lines VERY well.

Thanks for the input . Would anybody have an idea if that trans was still good , I would think it was dried up after sitting for so many years.
As far as the cause of my problem . Im quite sure the Torque-Converter went first and clogged the filter and smoked the trans .

Jim,

If I were to by one of those NOS transmissions I would simply examine the external seals to see if they were still pliable and remove the trans pan to make sure nothing crawled inside and died. If I found anything wrong I'd correct it and install the trans. Most of the internal seals look like piston rings and should be fine.
