Is there anything I can use in place of the original filter? I know they are obsolete, and there is a procedure to convert to the 1964 style, but I was wondering if I could use a power steering filter or something like that in its place. OR Can the old filter be taken apart and the guts replaced? OR Can a new can be (cost effectively) built that will hold a replaceable filter element? |

You can buy an expensive new old stock original-type filter. Or you can use a generic aftermarket inline automatic transmission filter such as Wix 58694, but it'll look hosey. Also, I can't tell if that's actually a filter or just a mesh screen and magnet inside there. Quote: Can the old filter be taken apart and the guts replaced?
No.Why not just put in the '64-up filter setup? One low-hassle operation and you're forever free of having to mess with the inline filter. |

I kinda like the original look. What I might try is to take to original one apart and remove the innards, the weld it back together. Then, do the '64 upgrade. Maybe... I had a chance to get all the parts I need from a 65 Valiant in the scrap yard. It had a complete /6 with auto. It still turned over. The body was rusted, and had the roof caved in. The yard would sell 'stuff' for pennies per pound, regardless of what it was. (I bought a $70 magneto for around $1.20). Looking back on it, I probably should have grabbed the engine/tranny/rear axle, etc. Later they also had an early 70's Dart with /6. Probably should have grabbed it also. Both have been crushed and sent to china in a container. |
