 Post subject: Ping-pong. Bad quench?
PostPosted: Thu Jun 20, 2002 11:49 pm
I have a basic 225 build up with 60 off the head and a .448" ISKY cam etc etc. I KNOW chad had a problem with pinging with this cam BUT I dont think my CR is anything over 9.1:1. Could this be to bad quench? The pistons are way down in the hole. Its just at lower RPM with little gas.

What I did to lessen it was to run bocsh H8BC (I think) plugs. That is 2 clicks colder then autolite 26 plugs and the stock listing H10BC plugs. All the slantplug listings are at the TOP of the heatrange scales. Anyone know of a even colder plug? I have a late head..

Other then that the car runs the same on 87 or 94 gas. Just pings a less/none with 94.

What does the distributor advance curve look like?
How much initial advance, how fast does it come on?
Does it ping with the vacuum advance disconnected?
Recurving the distributor may help.

Another thing to look at, especially when you get a head (or even a block milled), is the edge of the head(block) combustion chamber. That edge can be quite sharp. Under certain circumstances that sharp edge can be red hot and act like a glow plug, lighting the mixture prematurely(called detonation). You need to dress the sharp edge down with die grinder, flapper wheel, what have you.
My initial guess would be to try adjusting(w/ the hex key) the vacuum advance if its an MP electronic distributor.

Now, would you want to dial in LESS vacuum advance...or more? I know that more advance = more probability of pinging, but is a medium-throttle/medium-load situation (going up a slight hill without downshifting, for instance, at, say, 40mph) going to cause the vacuum advance to increase or reduce?

Dan,

The vac advance will stay the same, but the cyl. pressure will raise as you open the throttle so it pings until the throttle is open enough to drop the vacuum level and remove the vacuum advance.

Cheers,

Lou
