Post subject:  Old 904 Vs newer 904's
Apologies if this subject is elsewhere...

My '62 Savoy has the original 904 in it, a newer 225 from a '77 Aspen was partially installed. Now, There was mention of an adapter ring required to properly mate the older 904 TC with the newer 225 crank. Would a torque converter from a newer 904 also work? I found one in my "collection of parts" (as my wife euphemistically refers to it :lol: )

I'm going to have to pull the engine out anyway, so I can go either way on this. Clean up the spare TC ($$$ as it sat outside and most likely has dirt in it)or send $25 to Doc for the ring.

The older convertor has a smaller front pump input shaft. Don't think the newer convertor will even drive the front pump on the older transmission, just get the adapter ring and end the problem. :wink:

How would that work in reverse...ie, 66 225 and newer 904.

That doesn't fit. The larger torque converter hub of the late transmission doesn't fit into the small crank pocket.

Find a good transmission shop they can cut two converters apart and build you a custom one. I had it done once and it worked very well.

Good to know. Glad I asked first. Since I am going to have a custom converter made anyway, I'll make sure to let the shop know what my needs are. Thanks again fellas. I have the old converter so it shouldn't be an issue.
