Post subject:  Using a standard 833 with an OD bellhousing

I know this has been beat to death several times, but kicking around online I found mention of a bearing retainer PN 3878596 which supposedly bolts to a standard 833 but has the 5 1/8 OD. I also found a place that sells them for ~$60. Before I buy it I've been trying to find out if this is true, but haven't had any luck. Has anyone here had any experience with this? I just scored an OD bellhousing, ordered a Spec clutch and gathered everything else I need; this is the last part of the puzzle.

I made an adapter ring on a lathe when I removed my A833OD for a standard A833. Do you have a 307 or 308 input bearing? PN 3878596 is 5.125" OD for the 308 bearing. 2960122 is 5.125" OD for the 307 bearing.

Thanks, I'm not sure which bearing I have (833 out of a 67 and up A-body), but at least I know there is a retainer that will work.

'66-'67 A-body transmissions are the same, have the 307 input bearing and a 26-spline main shaft. '68 and later transmissions generally have the 308 bearing and 30 spline main shaft. Passon or Brewer's can tell you what you have by the casting numbers on the main case and tailshaft.

I found a few online, but don't remember where I was looking. That said, here's one for $52.99.

I'm going to try to get a adapter made on Monday, it should be cheaper than a new retainer.

I never got back to this thread, but I eventually got the right one from Passion Transmission. It cost 94.50, shipped with a new seal and gasket. It's the one on the left below:
