| Post subject: | Rear-Main Oil Leak - Pull engine? |
Hi guys! I have a 1981 Cordoba with the mighty slant six. Pictures here: http://www.functionbox.org/81Doba.htm With your help, she purrs like a kitten! She has a rear-main oil leak. I have a mechanic that does wonders for me, but I question the following: He says he has to pull the engine to properly fix the rear main oil seal. Does that sound right to you? PS: I don't believe he's trying to pull the wool over my eyes as he's done lots of quality work for me in the past, I just think he may not know better on this one.... Or maybe I don't -- Do you have to pull the engine? |

Yes.....I can't imagine trying to do a good job under the car. I suppose it could be done but it would take much longer......The pan needs to come off. You can't get the pan to clear the "K" frame and steering on some cars. Nice car....where is a shot of the engine bay? Does it need a coat of paint too? You could do that while it's out..... |

nice color, car looks really sharp, let him pull the engine check everything before putting it back in, you need to remove more under the car than you think when trying to do it with the engine in. |

Thanks for the advice -- and painting the engine is a great idea.. No pictures under the hood because it is embarrasing! |

Nice car! I think I was overseas when these were on the showroom floor. Wow! I like it! Follow Doc's how to, or at least print it for your mechanic. That'll make sure it's spic-and-span underneath. Sweet! I want one! CJ |

I have changed them with the engine in the car so it's certainly doable. The biggest problem is getting the oil pan out and back in without it leaking like a sieve. |

I was able to put one in on my 318 truck without pulling the engine - Results are not much better than whan it "leaked". I went from rope to Rubber Rear main Seal without Getting rid of the knurling on the Crank Should I have gotten rid of then knurling when going to this type seal? Also Verry Nice car - You dont see many of these cordobas left! Sepically the LS. Greg |
