Hi Guys had a question over here on the valiant50 forum What is the optimum operating temperature for a slant 6 - and is there a difference between street and track temperatures |

For street use, higher coolant temperature means more complete combustion (better fuel economy) and less oil contamination, but also higher underhood temperatures which can aggravate hot-start issues because our cars are carburetted rather than fuel injected. I use a 180°F (82°C) or a 195°F (91°C) thermostat, depending on application and engine configuration (a 180 in my '62, a 195 in my '73). I never use a 160°F (71°C) thermostat; that's too cold and just means throwing money away in the form of raw fuel out the tailpipe and into the crankcase. For track use, it totally depends on the engine configuration. See threads here and here and here and here, and info here. |
