Post subject:  Good Coil for HEI?
NAPA cross references the Blue Streak DR35 with IC22SB-- which seems to be their in house "bargain brand." Anybody used these? Also, there seems to be the equivalent put out by Mallory, MSD, and Accel all readily available on Ebay. Any quality concerns/insight there?

I upgraded to the HEI a few weeks ago and it made a world of difference. Still using my cylindrical MSD blaster coil, though, and thought I could get a little more oomph to the plugs.

Remove the "SB" from the end of the part number to get the real (Echlin) part instead of the Chinese no-name garbage, if you're buying from NAPA.

Your MSD Blaster II is a good choice with HEI..thats what I'm using with the HEI Reed installed on the 5th Ave. I think mine was made in Mexico, its about 4 or 5 years old. New MSD's are made....you guessed it...in China.

Post subject:  HEI Ignition Comparision
Below is a comparision, as measured by a Sun Computer II, between the Chrysler & HEI system; mostly spark duration for the first comparision.

The switchover occurred in just a few minutes with the engine still hot so that environmental conditions & engine condition were close. RPM jumped over 100 rpm when the HEI switch occurred.

Note the effect of opening up the plugs to .045 which doubles the spark intensity in the second comparision.

Below also is the setup of the HEI system including NAPA numbers used for the comparision(Magnecor Wire Set 6508 only non NAPA item).

I have the MSD Blaster 3 which I am very happy with except that its made in China... The B3 version has a tower plug connection so you will need the specific coil wire to match. Its longer than the B2 but it all fits nice in the stock location under the ALT no problems at all.

You know, I always hated that stock coil location on the slant. Too much clutter right there around the alternator.

If I was going to go through the trouble of putting together a custom ignition system, I would mount the coil on the fender.

DonPal: Very nice setup - pictures,drawing and all, that coil bracket looks really nice. I have a few questions if you have the time to answer:

The Magnecore wires you use #6508 are made for 1978/9>up /6, do they fit the HEI coil without modification, or have you ordered a special fitting on the coil end of the cable?

Does the length of the coil-to-distributor wire with the Magnecore 6008/6708/6508 wires give any leeway on mounting position, or is it short like the stock cable?

I am doing the swap these days on my '77 Aspen, are there any pitfalls at all?

Magnecor will make the coil wire to the length that you specify

They also put each end on the wire based on the car that you specify, also at no cost adder at least in my case

I told them to put one end to match a 76 SL6 distributor cap and the other end to match a 88 to 92 Camaro coil. I made my 8.5 mm coil wire short to reduce resistance (for spark intensity reasons) & increase life (assuming life is somewhat related to heat generated)

I used the 88 to 92 model coil (IC29) since it had female connections (easier to find connectors & better for moisture) and fits the bracket better than the earlier coil. The earlier coil (IC22) is larger and doesn't fit the 96 to 2000 truck coil bracket without modifications (I tried that first).

Small Hitches: The short wire puts the bracket just above distributor which has that disadvantage on servicing the distributor. The coil bracket has the 96 to 2000 coil riveted to it so they have to be ground off to remove the old coil (the junkyard will charge you for the coil that you don't want).
