Post subject:  1970 valiant floor shift conversion

Hello everyone been quite busy lately and haven't been on here as much as I would like. I have a question about my 70 Valiant. It has three on the tree but I purchased a oem 3 speed shifter out of a Duster on ebay. But when I got under the car there dosen't appear to be any way that it will work. Looks like it has to have more brackets than I have. I know that they had floor shifters because I had a new 1970 Valiant and it came from the factory with one. Can anyone give me some suggestions on this? maybe even some pictures of one installed. By the way I got my rebuilt 198 done head planed 100k, zero decked and completely balanced, erson cam, offenhauser with a 400 holley, clifford headers into dual 2 inch exhaust it runs great. I will try to get some pictures up soon. Thanks in advance for any help. Wayne

Check Doc's article on four speeds, I think there is a link to some info on three speeds in there and the pics may be helpful.

Just checked that 3-speed info link, not as helpful as I thought it would be, sorry!

Post subject:  Check your tranny tailshaft....

The tranny tailshaft has to have the three hole mounting spot on it (back by the driveline yoke)... there are some 3 on the tree models that didn't get that tailshaft in the early-70's models and were meant for "only" column shift use... in which case you are stuck with some choices:

1) swap tranny with floor shift model
2) Tear down tranny and swap tailshaft
3) Figure out an adaptor to mate to current tranny, or mount shifter to tranny tunnel/floor pan (not good if there's lots of free play in the drivetrain...it could come out of gear that way.)

Good Luck,
