pulled a motor / tranny from an 81 D-150 yesterday,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@N ... 983320548/

I know its been discussed before, when was the switch made from mechanical to hydraulic lifters? This is a mechanical lifter head
Valve cover is dark blue,, under the crud, motor is painted red.
Casting number on the side of the block is
28068307 BH
what year block is this?
I'll look for the engine S/N behind the alternator after I thaw out

thanks

The BH block is the more desirable of the blocks for a race motor. This according to the racing and block ID Sections on the main page. I would say its a 70-74 block.
Color has nothing to do with anything as old as our engines are.

Well, it's got adjustable rockers, so looks like a solid-lifter setup (pre-'81). The paint colour doesn't mean anything; last year for red was '68 (or perhaps '69 in some plants), and this cylinder head you're showing us is '75 or later (no plug tubes), so somewhen along the line it got painted. Casting number 2806830 means it's a '68-'75 block; "BH" blocks have extra reinforcement ribs.

DadTruck, I got out my magnifying glass to look at the flicker photos and the casting number on the head is 4104362 so looks like a 1979-1980 head. :D Talk to ya tomorrow!

Are ya sure? All '81s should have the hydro lifters; what have you seen?
