Post subject:  NEON Seats in a 65 Barracuda

I just bought a pair of seats out of a 2 door Neon. I'm very pleased. I got them for $100 for the pair. Now I've got to figure out how to mount them. The rear should bolt right to the floor. The front bolts to a crossmeber in the Neon. I'm thinking about taking some steel box, mayde 2"x2" and make a mount. I don't think angle iron will be strong enough. What do you think? I'll take pictures as I go. If these work out I might look into getting another set for my sedan. It would be cool to find the seats from an SRT-4.

I'm surprised how light these seats are. I should weigh them.

Hey Mike,
I'm sure angle iron would be fine. The factory buckets in my old Road Runner weighed a ton and only had 5/16" studs passing through a hole reinforced with sheetmetal. I'm guessing the reinforcing plate wasn't much thicker than the metal used in the floorpan. I'm pretty sure the '63 was the same way from the factory.
Will you be able to use the neon seat sliders, or do they provide uneven mounting points?

You are on the right track about boxing the front. I did this in 96 with a set of Omni buckets that I put in my Dart. Yes they are way lighter than the front bench I took out. Also used 4" electrical box covers as floor reinforcements. All on the cheap.Much more comfort.

73-76 A-body buckets are 5/16" studs and have the same type hole reinforcements in the floor pan as the bucket seat... the exception is hole
closest to the hump and front of the car, it has a 3"x3" plate tacked to top of the floor pan for reinforcement.

Pretty sure my Duster was reinforced at the rear hole, closest to the hump. But I could be wrong.

Post subject:  More work than I thought

Got the drivers side front seat out of the Barracuda today. It's gonna be more work than I thought. There's a big hump in the inboard side. Interesting, the holes aren't a square pattern. It'll make it hard to keep the same holes. I thought I could keep from drilling more. I'm thinking angle iron in the front bolted to the floor. The inboard is shorter (Height) than the outboard. I think I'll go out to the yard and take another look at how they mounted in the NEON. Too bad the Barracuda floor isn't flat. I really don't want to modify it. I might like to restore this car someday.

This is cool

are you going to use the seat brackets from the link you added? $94 for the pair seems reasonable to me. Do you think they would work in an earlier Valiant (64)?

I'm trying to keep this as low buck as possible. I'll probably try and make something first.

The A-body floor pans are very similar from 63-66; I'm betting those brackets would work at least down to 63 and possibly earlier.

When you are at the wrecking yard check in different cars for spacers from seat mounts. I found several sizes that worked out on the uneven floors.

Post subject:  Hey Romeo

We both ran in Vegas one year.

I didn't really look around. I made brackets out of angle iron. It's been really cold here lately so i haven't finished with the seats. I've got the drivers seat roughed in. I'm gonna take pictures once I get all of the measurements worked out. I"m pushing the seat back some. My son is 6' 3" and could use some legroom.

The holes in the floor are not a square. It requires some head scratching.

It occurs to me that yo might be able to adapt the original brackets to the new seats.

Post subject:  The Original Barracuda Brackets?

I thought about that. I didn't see a way. The seat back is connected to the rails on the NEON. It would be more trouble than it's worth I think. I did notice that the seats on My 07 Charger are just like the NEON ones. I need to measure the mounting points. Maybe there's a way to make a mount from box steel in the front, something else in the rear. The NEON and Charger floors are flat. I made angle brackets in the front. a 1.5x1.5 inboard and 2x2 outboard. There's about a 3/4" difference in floor height in the front. The problem in the rear is the shape of the floor. The mounting hole in the rear ends up inches off the floor. I used a 3/4" bolt and a stack of big washers. I used a different number of washers inboard and outboard to level the seat. It ain't pretty but it works. I'd like to cut some box steel adapters to make it more secure. I used the existing front floorboard holes. I had to drill holes in the rear. I didn't want to but I didn't see a way around it without making elaborate mounts.
