Post subject:  Better alternators for audio?

Hello,

I am currently installing a 1200 watt sound system on my 1964 valiant, but my old system dimmed the lights and it was only around 600 watts..
I'll have to get a big deep cycle battery and make sure my wires are upgraded as well.

I'm not sure on what amperage i have and what i would upgrade to, but im wondering if anyone out there knows where to get high output alternators or maybe rebuilt ones?

Thanks,

Aaron

I'm sure someone else can give better input than I canm but here's my $.02. You can adapt late model Denso alternators to the earlier mounts and I believe those are available up to 120 AMPs. You will definitely need to do something about your ammeter or it will almost certainly fry as that load. Another thing you can do is get a large capacitor to help even out the power demands. Since the 1200 wats is only actually seen on peaks, the average consumption will be considerably less. For what it's worth, 1200 watts at 12 volts is 100 Amps.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that.

Actually I also did just buy a 2 farad cap the other day for this installation..

Apparently its good for 1000 watt systems, which is close enough considering the amount of rattles I'll experience with the 2 12" subs :p
