I got a parts truck that actually runs pretty good. But what is strange about it is that when I connect a battery, there is a "click" coming out of the distributor area. It almost sounds like a loud relay. I had my son touch the negative terminal to the battery several times trying to locate the source, but the best I could come up with is either the distributor or coil is making the noise.

I do know the battery will die if left connected for a couple days, but that might be weather related. Anybeody ever heard of this? Almost forgot, it was originally lean burn but converted over to regular old electronic ignition.

Pull the coil wire and ground it. Repeat test and report please.

Try disconnecting the battery, turning of all the accessories, then putting a test light between the battery cable and the terminal on the battery. If it lights up, you have a current draw/short somewhere. Now try pulling each fuse until the light goes out. When the light goes out, the fuse you just pulled is the circuit with the short. If the light never goes out, then you have a short somewhere in the unfused wiring of the truck. There isn't much that isn't on a fuse, so the sources of the short are limited.

Here are the 84 Van wiring diagrams. A truck should be similar. PM me if you need these in better resolution.

I don't know what year truck you have, but these diagrams should be fairly representative of mid-80s trucks and vans.

Personally, I would suggest disconnecting the batt feed on the alternator and then listening for the click again.

I am always leery of de-lean-burn conversions. How well do you know/trust the person who converted the ignition? Do you trust he or she did a good job?

I am not sure who did the conversion, but it was a first-rate hack job! It's a bit dark outside but I will ground the coil wire and repeat the test, time permitting. If that doesn't tell me anything, I'll try the alternator. This is aToyota coil, would that make a difference?

Thanks for the scans Reed, the wiring I have retraced is hooked to what it is supposed to be hooked to. There are no lights, no dash, no gauges, no fuel sender in teh tank, nor turn signal switch (or steering column). The starter switch is laying in the floor. I had hopes of bringing this thing back to life though. Made the list of suspects really short!

Well, the fact they used a Toyota coil doesn't inspire confidence, but it may not be a bad thing in and of itself.

I can post the lean burn wiring diagram too, if you are interested.

That would be great! I think maybe they hooked up a wire that is always hot to the ignition box, instead of one that is supposed to be switched hot, maybe. Not sure what they did!

Does the truck have an oxygen sensor?

No oxygen sensor, but not really sure if the manifolds are stock either. I'd say it probably never had one.
