A week or so ago someone posted about a bog on a 390 Holley. I was having the same problem and said when I fixed it I would post the results. I have a mild cam, .100 off the head, ported, offy intake, MP headers, 3.50 gears, and auto trans. I tried every thing I knew to do to the carb, nothing worked. The cam (a 252 comp cams cam) shouldn’t need a stall converter but it did. I could feel it up on the converter and bogging off the line. Well it did need a converter, I went to Midwest on Dennis's recommendation and they built me a converter to my engine specks. I was running 17.46 with out the converter, Don’t know yet what it will do with it but it is flying now as compared to before. I predict 16.50 to 16.80. After I got the verter in then I could tune the 390, nothing worked before. Hope this helps someone. It would just barely spin the tires before, now roast them through first.

I am suprised that you need the high stall convertor with that cam. My Barracuda has about the same setup ( except 4spd OD, 3.23 gears) with the 252S cam and I can pull away from a stop at 900rpm without giving the car any gas on level ground. It will lug down to 1000 rpm in 3rd (1:1) and pull away cleanly. I went up a couple of jet sizes from stock on the 390, moved the accelerator pump cam to the more agressive position and use a yellow secondary spring.

I know I didnt think it would need a higher than stock stall but it did i've had V8's with this problem, up aginst the converter, and it felt the same. You know at a stop it was trying to pull through the brakes. I think I need some more carb work now but its 100 percent better. Plenty good enough to drive but I want more.
