| Post subject: | A bit of a leak |
Good day, Have a bit of a leak in to the foot wells of my 62 Valiant... I have looked to trace them, but I am impeded by the bodywork as to where exactly it originates from. Dousing with a hose does not do the trick; it's after a few hours of rain when it starts to enter the foot wells from the direction of the side walls... I have an idea (perhaps driven through desperation) that I could squirt some expanding foam into the cavity to help ‘seal’ her up a bit... Are there any suggestions for an alternative method? Take off the cardboardish panels on the sides of the forward footwells. It's cardboard panel and some insulation. Behind it there's a cavity with a big hole in it on the passenger compartment side. The outside is the fender. Water is supposed to drain from the airbox in front of the windshield thru a small passage in the corner and drop between the fender and the inner sheetmetal. The water has a tendency to hit the insulation behind the cardboard and then soak the front foot wheels..... Simple solution is to paste some plastic over the big hole in the interior sheetmetal (like under the door panels) and reinstall the insulation and cardboard..... |

Ed, that sounds like a description of the '63-'66 A-body in that area. The '60-'62 cars are structurally different (no underdash airboxes as such, for example) and the info you give here may not apply. Suspects in a leak like this include the windscreen rubber and (especially) the windscreen wiper pivots. There are wiper seal kits available, but none for the '60-'62 A-body specifically. I am guessing (but only guessing) that bits from the '62-'65 B-body and '63-'66 A-body kit could be used to do a good job of resealing the pivots. |

A quick note. DO NOT USE the expanding foam to keep water out. Its not waterproof. Its also not weather proof. I have had this bite me more than once. Frank |

OK thanks for the update... The windscreen seal does need replacing and at present I have applied some sealant to help; so far this is doing the trick in that department. Wiper pivots would be logical as the suspect for the leak and I shall investigate this further tomorrow morn--in my tests with the hose I have focused mainly around the door/wing area. Also, there are equal amounts of water in left/right footwells which then may suggest a common entry? Good advice with regards to the foam and I thanks you for that as I was pretty close to giving it a shot. |

Yep, expanding foam has no place in car bodyworks. It traps and holds moisture right up against metal, which causes severe corrosion. |

Hey Dan, Are you really human? I am starting to think you are some computer with a Mopar hard drive! You were spot on with the wiper pivots... There were no gaskets at all in place, so I made a couple of temporary ones and hey presto... it's now tighter than a ducks butt. Thanks for this |
