| Post subject: | Just wierd steering wheel vibration |
Thought I'd post this just for grins. Several years back we bought a 75 Valient Brougham that needed easy fixin. Driving it home 12 miles, I realized that at about 50 mph the steering wheel shook or oscillated left-right-left slightly, maybe about an inch, and especially noticable in slight turns at that speed. Otherwise the car drove great, no unusual noises. At home we put it up on stands and went through the front disc brakes and wheel bearings, and inspected and lubed all the suspension/steering and ball joints, inspected rear brakes etc, and universal joints- all ok. Still had the vibration. Back onto the stands, and back under the car, looking. Noted that one u-joint was a little loose, so changed them both. No more vibration. I've heard of this in piston engined airplanes, where a vibration will travel through the vehicle, setting up a harmonic resonance that exhibits itself in some strange place. In this case apparently it travelled up the steering column and made the steering wheel oscillate. Is that wierd or what?? Never had another problem with it, until that beautiful car got run off the freeway by a black Jetta, hit the concrete jersey barrier at a 45 degree angle, flipped onto it's right side, slid down the freeway on the door handles for another 100 feet, and dropped back down onto it's 3 1/2 wheels. It's been a wonderful parts car. Pat |
