I have been looking on Ebay, CL, etc for a suitable T-5 trans. Prices are all over the place. I am probably gonna be hitting the U pull its, as soon as the weather breaks (I have seen some Mustangs in the C4C program)
on 1/2 price day,, in the closest yard to me (reg price $60) if I can find 1 or a couple for $30, (well $40 with the $10 core added) I think I can swing a few to piece together, if need be. IDK if that yard has any available though.

but if that fails, how much have you guys paid for yours? (Yeah I know there will be variables; "new/rebuilt" vs grease covered in someone's garage, one junkyard to another, part of the country you are in, etc) but just wondering.

There's a new in crate (not rebuilt/reman) "Cobra" version on CL that's a lil rich for my blood right now but is otherwise tempting.
I have been looking on a couple of T5 specialty websites and have done nothing but "confuse myself" looking at all the available ratios, WC vs NWC, etc.

Depends on your market. The one I live in has no Mustangs....ever but a ton of S10s and some pickup versions. These include the inprobable T5 in a 91 Ford F350 4x4 crew w/460EFI .

Having lived with a non T5 for a decade I would recommend using whatever 5 speed is cheap where you live. Its not a hard swap regardless of what box you use.

Get the T/O bearing, driveshaft yoke, shifter boot, trans mount and clutch disc while you are at the yard........

I went on Craigslist, and found a guy that rebuilds t-5s for the mustang crowd. Total I have into it, including a custom 5th gear- $800.

By the way, I recommend getting higher 5th gear. The standard ratio that mustangs use is too low, given the amount of torque that the slant has at highway rpms.

update
  • stock mustang 5th is 0.68
the option I went for was 0.73
an option if you really want close ratio is 0.92

Here is the guy that I have been working with.

We had a user on here a while back and he had authored a book on rebuilding T-5's with the book having a real nice section on that... it also lists a fair amount of vehicles and what gear ratios their box had in it. Price varies around here from $250-$750 depending on the vehicle the box came out of. Looking at the rear gear ratios I'd want to run with the thing the best match was the GT/Cobra mustangs... there are 4 boxes available in my area and I could buy an A-833 close ratio box for the price of it...
Oddly while doing research I poked the idea of using one of the T-56 boxes...until I saw that $2500 for a Corvette box was going to be a "no-go"...

Happy hunting!

I see some with 2.95 1st gear; others (seems most common with Mustangs) 3.35 1st; S 10s are like 4.0-4.10:1. way too low. I dont want a granny low.
OD goes anywhere from.064-.092; .092 don't seem "worth" the small change from 4th gear of 1.00 (direct)
I also see alot of listings for .082-.084ish.

Greg
I have seen rebuildable cores on CL for $60
alot of rebuilts there and on Ebay for ~$800-850 (with a $250 core on top of that)
there's a Cobra WC version (the "Z code one) on CL as we speak for $1000 firm; new (not rebuilt) in crate; too rich for my blood unless this Powerball ticket I have, hits the big one.

F 350 with a 460 and a T5?? huh? that doesnt sound "factory".

It was. The EFI 460 would not rev over 2200 rpm. We used to pull a large trailer with it in off road situations. (Not my truck.....we were working it on forest fires as a crew truck). Almost infinite torque at an idle....but only about 200hp revved up.

It was a very nice shifting trans,,,,,,never gave us a lick of trouble.
