Hi, I found a Chrysler air conditioning unit in a 1964 dart at the junk yard. I would like to put it in my 1964 barracuda. How much is a used condition unknown unit like this worth $$$? It is complete and on the car right now. also Has anyone rebuilt one of these and are there any things to look for that commonly go bad on these units or are really expensive or impossible to replace. Thanks joe |

Did you check with the yard to see what they want for it? Offer 'em $100 and see if they bite; If it's a genuine Chrysler "Cool Aire" or "Cool Comfort" (Airtemp) unit in good shape, that's a lowball offer. If they're not looking to get rich off it, go grab it; they're hard to find at this late date. They work well and none of the working parts is irreparable. Get everything. If the vehicle has a fan shroud, get it (and send me a PM; I've been looking for a sample one of these to repro!). The horizontal filter-dryer is no longer available, but there are substitute units that can without great difficulty be substituted. You can put in a modern parallel-flow condenser to improve system performance and reduce compressor head pressure. |

He said he would take $75 for everything. I am going to get it this week end. Do you guys know if there is a large radiator that goes in an air conditioned car. Should I try to grab the one that is in the car? Thanks Joe |

You'll need a heavier-duty radiator to handle the extra heat that gets dumped into the cooling system by the A/C. If the one in the car is in good condition, grab it for reconditioning. Does it have a fan shroud? |

Also get the crankshaft damper. You will not be able to put a drive belt on, without the pulley that bolts to the back side of the damper. These pulleys are hard to find. Only source is salvage yard/used. Make sure you get any/all brackets, pulleys, etc that are on the engine. Some, not all, also had a double water pump pulley, get that if it is there. Also the fan, should be more then 4 blades. And like Dan said, the radiator and shroud. This is the factory system, not aftermarket, right? |

The inside unit has a penstar on it so i believe it to be original. I can't remember if there is a shroud there or not but will find out when i get back there thus weekend if the weather does not go south. Joe |
