Much more goes into "ride" than just the tires. At a given section width, typically the sidewalls have to be stiffer the lower the profile goes in order to maintain load carrying ability. Although this would dictate something like a 205/50-15 has a stiffer sidewall than a 205/70-15 in the same tire model line, it does not dictate a harder ride because there are variables such as chassis stiffness, spring/bushing rates, suspension travel, tire inflation, and shocks. Even the seats enter into the equation. This becomes even more open when different tire manufacturers and tire lines are compared.

The only true comparison would be different tires on the same car. I just went from 195-55-15 front tires and 205-70-15 rear tires to 205-65-15 tires all around, did not notice a change in ride quality. My car may not be the best comparison as no matter what tires I run it rides like a go cart, but that is how I like it.

The least expensive route would be to try several types and sizes of used tires to find something you like, then buy those tires new. The only problem may be finding used tires in the sizes you want to try, around here 15" and smaller tires are getting hard to find used with life left on them.

Something else to consider is that lower profile tires seem to let your wheels get hurt worse if something bad like a pot hole happens.
