Well, after the scare of the spun bearings - (turned out to be 4 loose flex plate bolts), and thinking things were "back to normal" after a month plus, I'm on the highway headed home and the damn thing starts blowing smoke everywhere! I made it into the rest area and popped the top and found oil and smoke billowing out of the breather of the valve cover!! yea What did it did to me this time ???? Dan |

How hot did it get? How many miles on this engine? What weight oil are you running? I hope you running a good quality oil. Sounds like it maybe time for new rings..... |

no heat whatsoever oil pressure has never waivered mileage? i'm gonna guess at less than 5,000 per year for the last 5 years butt i do kick the crap out of it pretty often! LOL i've been thinking that the valves are floating at times? this was a complete rebuild fired up for the first time on april 1st 2005 - (yep - april fools day!) anyway - up until recently it's been an awesome - reliable - fun beyond belief - even economical, vehicle to run around in the gun is getting closer to it though!!!! lol - like a few others, my emotions when it comes to this thing vary at times! my hope is - not the rings - valves - sound easier |

Was the coolant and/or oil low after this happened? Either one have an unusual color? |

Why do you think the valves have been floating? What R's. What springs are in it? Unless the intake seals are gone, or the guides are shot. I can't think of why that would be part of the problem on such a young engine. If you broke a ring, that could do it. Just how many rpm have you been turning? By no "Heat whatsoever," what do you mean? If your not getting up to normal operating temperatures, the engine may have become damaged under high loads running cold. Have you had any ongoing rich running problems? Flooding and/or fuel wash down of the cylinders can result in rapid and radical wear and failure. CJ |

no color on or in either oil was a bit down but i figured that was par for the course since it was being pushed up and out of the breather cap ? so - no noises that changed - just a damn sh-tpot full of oil smoke and oil oh yeah - $7.00+TAX PER QUART FREEKIN OIL TOO!!! -mobil 1 - since day one |

You've been running synthetic from day one? hmmmm. That can delay ring seat. Your rings may all have the gaps pointed roughly in one direction. Up. Gravity works. CJ |

Unless the ring material and cylinder wall finish were optimized for synthetic I don't think running synth on first start is a good idea. Take the plugs out and see if any of them look significantly different then the others - then run a compression test. |

Ceej - sorry for the bit of untruth - I did run regular oil - can't remember which - for the early breakin period - then switched to mobil1 by no temps - i meant nothing high it ran at the "normal" temps it has been running forever now HOWEVER - you did hit on a sore point with me and this damn carb - (DAN - guess a new carb is out for the present time!) - it has been running rich - not a bad thing at highway speeds and passing speeds or the strip - but normal day to day driving - not so good when i had it apart a month or so ago - everything inside looked awesome - clean and fresh with nothing "strange" looking reason I mentioned "floaters" - I am prone to high rpm's with this thing - will slap it into 2nd at 45 with no problems - and when i did - I would hear a noist that sounds like ..........hhmmm.......closest thing i can think of is floating higher n higher - based on a sound that i hear coming from below! lol hard to explain - drove semi for 20+yrs - sounds are key - but talking isn't! |

Take the plugs out and see if any of them look significantly different then the others - then run a compression test. I think that is your next step.....either your rings aren't seated or you may have broken one. Who did the rebuild? It would be interesting to see if your plugs are running a light beige. If not, then Ceej maybe on to something. |

Ted - i did the rebuild - it's been running hard now for 5 years - including a trip or two to the drag strip! |

Oh - the springs are stock - that was the only thing that bugged me about the build - i didn't have access - at the time - $$$$$ - to anything other than stock springs. |
